And would you say that that’s also what played into your character, Agent Cruise, being drawn to the Mother? Seeing as he wasn’t as abrasive or aggressive as the other agents.

I think that they’re connected in a way through his backstory, which you don’t see. Nikki and I started the backstory on Cruise together as director and as actor. We started with “What’s Cruise from?” Nikki and I came up with he was a cop, but he was also from the criminal side of life. In terms of the backstory we created, Cruise was a criminal, not necessarily because he wanted to be, but because of less opportunities in life and him needing to put a couple of things on his table.

We decided he and his sister were orphaned, so they had a natural empathy for what had to happen with the daughter, played incredibly well, obviously, by Lucy [Paez], and what’s needed to support Jen, playing as the mother who could not be in the life of her child, at least giving her child a future even if they couldn’t be together.

There’s an empathy that we find Cruise has for her in ways that the other FBI agents, as you pointed out, did not. They were way aggressive. I think it’s the backstory in it. And it worked. I played that he has empathy for orphans. He has empathy for having been a criminal and doing some more than shady stuff and then cutting across the grain. Cruise figured it out, became a cop after being a criminal, and then he became an FBI agent. That’s the backstory of Cruise. And I think I just tried to stay in that and lock on to Jen and her character – be this voice of reason, but also be a protector and not a judge, try to not judge her. I think that was Cruise. And I think equally, as you stated, it drew me to playing Cruise.
