The exact lineup of individual events changes at each Winter Olympics. Sports drop in and are added all the time — snowboarding is a relatively new addition, for example.
And until the 1990s, demonstration sports were a part of the Games. Participants of an obscure event would play a few exhibition rounds to help popularize it, and hopefully get it adopted as a real Olympic event, with medals awarded and everything.
