Classic Zuck. He announced the name change to direct attention away from the recent data-stealing scandal, but ended up amplifying it.

While the “name change” was an attempt at distraction and misdirection, the umbrella company is also being founded to encompass Facebook’s many new enterprises. Namely, the 10,000 employees they just hired to flesh out the “metaverse” — a chillingly dystopian title for the virtual reality world Zuck & Co. are building.

This metaverse will include Horizon Worlds, a VR game world built by creators, as well as Horizon Workrooms, a VR workspace, both of which will be explored via the Oculus.

The metaverse also includes AR (augmented reality), which uses the real world as a backdrop for virtual components. Think of a pair of glasses that allow you to browse someone’s social media profile simply by staring at their face.

All of this tech will be placed into the hands of a megalomaniac with a proven track record of selling your personal data to the highest bidder. What could go wrong?
