Parents are supposed to prepare kids for their future lives and the world at large. Doling out advice, whether it’s asked for or not, falls under that job description. Our parents were supposed to pass on their insights from lives well lived to give us the edge when we’re out here on our own.
But just because they’re older doesn’t mean they’re wiser. Sometimes, parents don’t seem to know anything at all.
For example: My father — often declared college to be useless — when I was in college. My mother thought that if I wanted to be a writer I should “mail my jokes to Robin Williams and Jay Leno!” I was 10.
Parents can be kind of dumb and weird, even or especially when they’re trying to impart life lessons.
